The secret to a beautiful spring garden begins with a little planning now. As the soil starts to cool, it’s almost time to plant your spring-flowering bulbs – but when should you plant them, how deep should they go and which varieties will grow best in your garden? This week, Bulb School is answering some of your most-asked questions to help you create a spectacular spring display with confidence. Don’t forget to pre-order your favourites now, ready for delivery from the beginning of October.

When should I plant my spring bulbs?
Most spring-flowering bulbs, including daffodils, crocuses, alliums and hyacinths, can be planted from October once the soil begins to cool.
Why should I wait until November to plant tulips?
Planting tulips later, when the weather and soil are colder, helps reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as tulip fire.
How deep should I plant my bulbs?
As a general rule, plant bulbs at a depth of around two to three times their own height. Always check the individual planting instructions, as this can vary between varieties.
Which way up should bulbs be planted?
Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards and the flatter, root end at the bottom. If you’re unsure, plant the bulb on its side – it will naturally find its way upwards.
